    COMPOSER

American composer Florence Beatrice Price (1887-1953) was a pianist, organist and music teacher. Born in Arkansas, she was educated at the New England Conservatory and was active as a composer in Arkansas and Chicago.

She is considered the first female African-American concert composer. Her output was extensive with over 300 works.  A substantial collection of her works was found in 2009 in her abandoned summer home. John Jeter and Naxos Records are credited as being major catalysis in the rediscovery of her music.
